Martin Barre, painter, died aged 68. An abstract artist, he gained attention in the Fifties and Sixties for his technique of squeezing paint directly on to the canvas and later for his use of spray-paint. Exhibited at the avant- garde gallery Realites Nouvelles and later at the Salon des Comparisons. Awarded the French Grand National Painting Prize in 1988.

Alfredo Ricart, diplomat, died London 2 July. Former ambassador to Britain for the Dominican Republic, and ambassador to the United Nation's Conference on Trade and Development. Executive director of the International Sugar Organisation.
