Obituary: Dixy Lee Ray
Dixy Lee Ray, politician, died Fox Island, Washington State 2 January aged 79. A Democrat and an outspoken supporter of the nuclear industry, she was chairwoman of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1973 until 1975. She was Washington state's first woman governor, from 1977 to 1981. Aged 12 she became the youngest girl to climb Mount Rainier, Washington's highest peak.
