Sean “P Diddy” Combs was attempting to “protect himself and his son” in the incident that saw the rapper arrested and charged for assault with a deadly weapon, his representatives have said.

Combs, 45, was arrested after a fight reportedly broke out between the rapper and his son’s football coach at University California Los Angeles involving a kettlebell - a weight with a handle – which police classified as a deadly weapon.

“The various accounts of the event and charges that are being reported are wholly inaccurate,” the rapper's spokeswoman Nathalie Moar said in a statement.

“What we can say now is that any actions taken by Mr. Combs were solely defensive in nature to protect himself and his son. We are confident that once the true facts are revealed, the case will be dismissed.”

TMZ had reported Combs’ disagreement was with one of his son’s coaches. Justin Combs is on the college football team on a scholarship. A source told the site Combs witnessed the coach giving his son a difficult time, and later confronted him over it.

TMZ reported Combs had told police he had been holding the kettlebell in self-defence.
