Beverley Knight, 34, is a singer, songwriter and record producer. From 25 February she will be appearing in the 50 Women of Substance exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Haven

If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be...

Probably getting ready for dinner. I'm enjoying the quiet times before the chaos of writing the album.

A phrase I use far too often is ...

"You know" – I seem to slip it into anything.

I wish people would take more notice of...

The talent in individuals rather than just style. One person who truly deserves their place in the public eye is Amy Winehouse; she's brilliant. It's a shame her talent has been overshadowed recently as she's worthy of her position.

The most surprising thing that happened to me was...

Being grabbed by Prince and being told that I am going to play at his after-show party. I did the support slot twice at the O2 arena and both times I played at his after-show. I nearly collapsed and died right there with the shock.

A common misperception of me is...

That I'm religious person. I was raised in a strict religious household but that's not me.

I am not a politician but...

If I were, I'm damn sure I wouldn't be following America like a pet dog.

I'm good at...

I'm a closet cook. I tend to cook West Indian food. I am also a keen mimic.

I'm very bad at...

Lying. My eyes go big and I shift from one foot to another. I'm awful.

The ideal night out is...

Music with a mix of soul, R'n'B, and a bit of indie. My mates and boyfriend would be there and we'd be able to sing along.

In a truer life I'd have been...

A barrister, but I couldn't lie. I like to stand in front of an audience.

The best age to be is...

Now.

My philosophy is this...

Smile lots. Smile through pain. Smile and everyone smiles with you.
