Richard Keys' wife has said she instigated divorce proceedings after discovering her husband had an alleged affair.

According to The Daily Mail, the 59-year-old former Sky Sports presenter had a relationship with a 27-year-old he met in Qatar.

His wife, Julia Keys, has cancer and said the news had placed a strain on her health. She also claimed Keys had been inundating her with “desperate” pleas to get back together.

Ms Keys said what her husband and the woman he allegedly cheated with had done to her was "disgusting", especially given that they knew about her "condition".

She said the news had also had a negative impact on her family.

“I have instigated divorce proceedings. He is not divorcing me,” she told The Mirror.

“He has been begging me to get back together with him to give him another chance and make our marriage work and that he had no intention of staying with her. He has been bombarding me with desperate appeals to get back together, including turning up on the doorstep here.

“But enough is enough. I have to look after myself now. It has had a negative impact on my health but that has to take priority now and I’ve got to move on.”

Keys has yet to a release a statement on the matter but claimed there were many inaccuracies in the reports. “I expected a mixed bag of reaction, thanks for the support. There are many inaccuracies in the reports,” he tweeted on Saturday.

Keys resigned as Sky presenter in 2011 after leaked footage of him and co-host Andy Gray making sexist remarks about women appeared on YouTube. Keys and Gray apologised for their actions.

After leaving Sky Sports, Keys presented a football show on TalkSport Radio and later moved to Qatar, where he now works with BeIN sports channels.

A representative for Keys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
