Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas has died aged 36, following a single-car crash in Nashville, Tennessee.

Bironas lost control of his car and went off the road at 11pm, colliding with several trees and flipping upside down, according to a government news release.

He was announced dead upon arrival at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol.

His death was confirmed on his official Twitter account, which posted: “It’s w/ heavy hearts that we confirm the passing RB # 2 We appreciate your respect for the family’s privacy and your prayers at this time.”

In June Bironas had married Rachel Bradshaw, the daughter of legendary quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

Bironas was a top-tier player, and holds the NFL record for field goals in a single-game after scoring eight in a 2007 win over the Houston Texans.

He also holds the Titans record of 11 game-winning kicks during his career, including a 60-yard game winner against the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 – the longest field goal in Titans history.

He was released by the team in March after nine enormously successful seasons with the club during which he became the second highest scorer in its history.

After his release, he said in a statement: "Though it is sad to leave the Titans today, I am leaving on a high note, and I look forward to what is to come."
