He has won countless awards and received critical acclaim for his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, in which he opens up about his failed relationships and struggles with his sexuality.

But now Sam Smith has shared a screengrab of a social media account set up to post abusive comments about him in order to draw attention to the prevalence of homophobia.

Smith was praised for standing up to ignorant people and remaining calm in the face of homophobia.

The singer has frequently talked about the homophobic bullying he received as a child, and has discussed his struggle with accepting his weight.
