In the studio working on the new album.

A phrase I use far too often ...

"The thing is ..." The whole band does it. I think we got it from our manager. We all keep laughing about it and trying to say it in a Scottish accent

I wish people would take more notice of ...

Each other. Especially in London. We're all busy and have somewhere to get to but when somebody acknowledges you it makes you feel like a human rather than a robot – even if you are pressed up against 5,000 other people on the Tube.

The most surprising thing that happened to me ...

Is that I actually managed to do what I set out to do when I was 13.

A common misperception of me is ...

That I'm scary and some sort of ice maiden, but I'm not at all.

I am not a politician, but ...

If I were I'd order a Bill to make people more focused on what's important in life and less focused on material things. Also maybe make one of the days of the week a "do what you want" day which people could use to catch up with friends or family, or do something worthwhile.

I'm good at ...

Writing dodgy sci-fi. One day I'm going to write a trilogy and it's going to be really good ... maybe.

I'm very bad at...

Swimming. I can't really swim. I love water and the sea but swimming pools freak me out.

The ideal night out is ...

One that is as random and spontaneous as possible. Where there's no proper plan and we end up wherever.

In moments of weakness ...

I buy things that I don't need – anything.
