Uggie, the Jack Russell from The Artist, dies aged 13 following battle with prostate cancer

The canine star of Oscar-winning film The Artist has died in Los Angeles aged 13.

Uggie, a Jack Russell terrier, was put down last week in LA following a battle with prostate cancer, according to TMZ. His death was confirmed on his official Twitter account.

Uggie often stole the scene when playing opposite Jean Dujardin in the black-and-white silent film, and previously worked with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in Water for Elephants.

While he went on to develop an illustrious film career, Uggie was initially intended for the dog pound, but was rescued by animal trainer Omar von Muller, who began entering him in animal talent shows.

After the success of The Artist, Uggie was awarded the Palm Dog award at Cannes film festival and was the first dog to leave his paw prints outside Grumman’s Chinese theatre in Hollywood.

He even released an autobiography, Uggie - My Story, which was described as a 'candid, canine tell-all' written by the dog himself, which just goes to show he truly was a talented animal.
