Zac Efron topless: The star's shirtless moment sparks accusations of male objectification and sexism at the MTV Movie Awards 2014
Efron awkwardly shuffled around on stage, attempting to ignore the baying cries from the crowd, as Ora joined in, wolf-whistling and begging for a big reveal as she presented him with the golden popcorn trophy.
But he was too slow. So she took matters into her own hands, ripping his top open and pulling it off over his muscular shoulders, much to the delight of the lascivious masses.
Since then, photographs of the High School Musical star’s toned torso and chiselled abs have become a fairly regular fixture of news feeds and timelines the internet over.
But not everyone’s that OK with it.
@RitaOra Thanks for such a bold move. I don't know if I could've done that on my own.Zac Efron (@ZacEfron) April 14, 2014
In fact, some are downright offended by the spectacle, saying that the whole award smacks of sexism and accusing those who tweeted their approval at the stunt of male objectification:
Girls who complain about "the objectification of women" incessantly on my TL are now posting half naked pictures of Zac Efron

Soooo... Zac Efron essentially won an award for being objectified shamelessly by a horde of countless fangirls...? REALLY?! #MTVMovieAwardsRikki (@heyyyitsrikki) April 14, 2014
It must suck to be Zac Efron. Always objectified and no one ever leaves him alone. Feel bad for the guy.Johnny Oceans (@JeezyOceans) April 14, 2014
I drool over Zac Efron as much as the next girl but do we have to make him strip on camera every time? Girls arent the only ones objectifiedMichelle Brun (@mi_shellll) April 14, 2014

HAHA! Objectifying award objectified winner (a man)! Well played, Role Reversal. Zac Efron—Shirt-stripped #fbtolleson, terry (@tamashii) April 14, 2014
Zac Efron looks so objectified. #MTVMovieAwardsJess Goodwin (@thejessgoodwin) April 14, 2014
Of course, he did stand about happily posing for a considerable amount of time after the lecherous garment-grappling occurred, and didn’t seem in much of a rush to re-clothe himself. One could argue he was objectifying himself - playing up to the fact that his face and body have probably won him far more roles in the past than the super-method thespian skills he definitely hasn't honed over the years.
But would it have been quite the same if a female actress had been pressured into parading around in her bra live on television?
Retweeting a pic of a shirtless boy is the same objectification as a boy retweeting a pic of a girl in a bikini. It's a two way streetNatalie Pfeifer (@gimmesomeaNAT) April 14, 2014
