A policeman who was believed to be escorting an RAF convoy of nuclear weapons was killed last night when his motorbike collided with an articulated lorry. The accident occurred when the convoy turned off the M4 at junction 11 on to the A33, near Burfield, and one of the three police outriders collided with the lorry.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that a police officer had been involved in an accident but a spokesman said he was unable to comment on the contents of the convoy.
