At least 20 people were wounded, some by gunfire, in a confrontation between protesters and police in the Yugoslav republic of Montenegro yesterday, police sources said.

Angry protesters threw stones at police armoured cars after the crowd was dispersed with teargas. Gunfire from automatic weapons had earlier echoed in the air above the protesters. Some 8,000 people loyal to hardline outgoing president Momir Bulatovic were protesting at the handover of power to his rival, pro-Western Milo Djukanovic, due to be sworn in as president today.
