Detectives investigating the murders of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan, six, near their home in Nonington, Kent, said yesterday that a witness had reported seeing a man they are convinced is the killer. The witness, a local man who was walking his dog through fields at around 5pm on Tuesday, said he had seen the man acting in an "agitated" manner just one mile from the spot where Mrs Russell, 45, and her daughter were bludgeoned to death and her other daughter Josephine, nine, was left fighting for her life.

The man, 35-40, of slight build, and driving a beige family saloon car similar to an Escort, threw a white bag into the hedge, the witness said. Police forensic experts later found a white string bag belonging to Megan and Josephine which contained clothing. Clare Garner
