Cameron’s Cabinet to meet in Scotland

David Cameron will bring his Cabinet north of the border this year for a special meeting in Scotland. The Prime Minister announced the move as he visited Glasgow yesterday. He said ministers would “take stock” of preparations for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and added that Cabinet members would see if there was “anything else we can do to help”.

Street-protest threat over election result

Cambodia’s main opposition party has filed a formal challenge to last month’s election result, alleging widespread irregularities by the ruling People’s Party. The National Rescue Party has threatened a massive street demonstration unless an independent body investigates.

Man charged with ‘bright’ boy’s murder

A man was been charged with the murder of “very bright” teenager Ajmol Alom, Scotland Yard said last night. Aminur Nazir Khan, 19, from Poplar, was charged with murder and attempted murder and will appear in court today. The 16-year-old Alom was stabbed on Monday night.

New investigation into victims of war

Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed a commission to investigate wartime disappearances ahead of an update to be given to the UN Human Rights Council on the country’s progress in investigating alleged war crimes during the conflict with the Tamil Tiger rebels.

Servicemen face reintegration strain

UN calls on Hamas to halt executions

Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called on Hamas to cease executions in Gaza, saying they are imposed without fair trial. Mrs Pillay said Hamas must follow international law. Since the Islamist group took over in 2007, courts have issued 36 death penalties, nine of which have been carried out.

Heatwaves ‘will become the norm’

Global temperatures are climbing so rapidly that extreme heatwaves will become “the new normal” by 2040, experts have warned. Britain could spend up to one fifth of the summer in extreme heat unless dramatic action is taken to curb emissions, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research said. MORE
