A five-year-old boy died yesterday when he crawled back into his burning home in a vain attempt to rescue the family dog, police in Essex said.

When he realised what had happened, Sean Hogg's father, Peter, went back into the house in Basildon, Essex, plucked the boy from the flames and plunged him into a paddling pool. But Sean was already dead. Essex police said Mr Hogg had rescued all three of his children but Sean crawled back in through a cat flap.
