The cancer victim who last week gave evidence in a makeshift courtroom at his home in Beith, Strathclyde, as the first stage of a legal battle with the tobacco industry, has died. Alfred McTear, 48, a former smoker, was suing Imperial Tobacco for pounds 1/2 m in a case he knew he was unlikely to see reach a full hearing. The case will continue.
