Chess hope out
Nigel Short, England's world chess title contender, was eliminated from the Interpolis tournament in Tilburg, the Netherlands, losing his fourth round match 2-0 against Ilya Smirin of Israel. Michael Adams, who gained a place among the last eight by defeating Alexander Kovalev (Russia) is the last surviving English player in the knock-out contest.
