A man suspected of firing the handgun which killed PC Sharon Beshenivsky was arrested yesterday after officers laid siege to a house in Newport, south Wales.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 24, was arrested on a street which was cordoned off by Gwent police on Sunday.

A second man arrested with Mr Shah had been in the same house as him, on Cromwell Road in the Maindee area of Newport, but he is not wanted in connection with the murder of PC Beshenivsky, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, last month.

That means the hunt continues for Mustaf Jama, a 25-year-old Somali, another suspect. Mr Jama's brother, Yusuf, 19, has already appeared in court charged with murder, robbery and firearms offences.

PC Beshenivsky, 38, was gunned down as she investigated a robbery at a travel agent's in Bradford city centre on 18 November. Her colleague PC Teresa Milburn, 37, was seriously injured in the same incident.

WPC Beshenivsky had been due to celebrate her youngest child's fourth birthday with her husband and children. Mr Shah was born in Burnley but is believed to have lived in London for the last four years.
