A three-week-old baby has died after being stabbed alongside his mother at their home in North Tyneside.

The child and 21-year-old woman were taken to hospital after an assault at an address in Portland Close, Wallsend, on Wednesday afternoon.

Police have now confirmed the baby boy, who was given round-the-clock care by doctors in hospital, died on Sunday.

A court order currently bans his identity from being revealed.

The infant’s mother is now in a stable condition but continues to receive treatment in hospital.

A man, who is known to both victims, was arrested shortly after the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cole, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a devastating time for the baby’s family.

“Specialist officers continue to offer them support and I know the community in Wallsend are by their side too.

“It is impossible to imagine what they are going through and I would ask the public to continue to respect the family’s privacy at this time.

“A man has been charged in relation to the incident and we will continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service as the case moves forward.”

Denis Erdinch Beytula, 27, of Portland Close, Wallsend, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.
