Dave Lee Travis sexual assault trial: Jury could reach a majority verdict within days

The jury deliberating over former BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis’s trial for sexual assault have been told that they may now return a majority verdict of 10-2.

The veteran presenter, real name David Griffin, 69, stands accused of one count of indecent assault on a woman between 1990 and 1991, one count of indecent assault on a woman in 1993 and one count of sexual assault in 2008.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Earlier today (22 September), Judge Anthony Leonard asked the jury if, after three days, they had reached a unanimous verdict on all counts, to which they answered “no”.

The Judge then confirmed: "The time has now come where I can accept a verdict on which not all of you agree, but on which 10 can agree."

The jury were instructed by the Judge Leonard last week to disregard the press attention surrounding the case, as well as allegations made against other famous men in the media recently.

He said: "You are trying allegations of historical sexual assaults against someone who has been in the public eye for many years.

"The fact that the defendant is a well known media personality does not change the rules of this case."

The veteran DJ was arrested during Operation Yewtree in 2012.

"There is no such thing as guilt or innocence by association," the judge continued.

"It follows that you will try this defendant on the evidence in this case and ignore as irrelevant any allegations which have been made against others or the results of trials they have faced."

The trial continues.
