Five people were being questioned today after a woman died in a hit-and-run crash in the early hours of the new year.
The 20-year-old was with four other pedestrians, aged in their 20s, when a Honda car mounted the pavement in Palmers Green, north London.
Five men in their 30s were arrested at an address in Ilford in connection with the collision and were being held at an east London police station, Scotland Yard said.
Metropolitan Police officers and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene on the North Circular Road just past the junction with Green Lanes at around 4.25am yesterday.
The woman, who has not been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5.10am.
A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for 10am today at Haringey Mortuary, according to police.
A Met spokesman said the other pedestrians were taken to hospital, where a man and woman remain in a critical condition.
A second man remains in hospital with a broken leg, while another man has since been discharged.
"At this early stage collision investigators believe that the white Honda was travelling eastbound with a red vehicle (no further details at this stage), when it mounted the footpath and was in collision with the pedestrians," the spokesman said.
"The occupants of the white Honda stopped at the scene and abandoned the vehicle running off on foot.
"The red vehicle did not stop at the scene."
Officers from the collision investigation unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage are investigating.
