Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering a pensioner at her seafront flat in Southampton.

Family members discovered the body of the woman, in her late 80s, in her one-bedroom, ground-floor flat close to the affluent Ocean Village marina in the city.

The marina complex is a popular place for sailors and football players to live.

Last night, relatives went to the property in Atlantic Close after not hearing from her since Thursday and made the discovery.

The 37-year-old local man was detained yesterday morning by detectives and police have cordoned off a wide area around the woman's home to enable specialist officers to search for evidence.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Farrell, who is leading the investigation, said: "Although we have made an arrest, I would like to stress that we are still very much in the preliminary stages of our investigation and our enquiries continue."
