Man arrested on suspicion of murder after woman dies following assault in Manchester

A man is under arrest on suspicion of murder after a woman was assaulted and died.

The victim, 38, was discovered with serious head injuries at an address on Culcheth Lane in Newton Heath, Manchester, after police and ambulance were called at 12.45am today.

Paramedics attempted to revive woman at the scene, but she died a short time later.

Police arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he remains in custody for questioning.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said formal identification of the woman by next of kin has not yet taken place and a post mortem is due later today.
