A man was arrested on suspicion of throwing a missile at a Premier League football match which partially blinded a police officer, police said today.

Police had issued a CCTV image of a man they wanted to speak to about the incident which took place at the end of the derby tie between Manchester City and Manchester United on Saturday, April 17.

An object was thrown as police dealt with a disturbance involving rival supporters outside Gate 7 of the Eastlands stadium.

The 24-year-old officer was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment and currently only has partial sight in the injured eye. It is not known if this will be permanent, police said.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Following a media appeal to trace a man police wanted to speak to a 23-year-old man handed himself to police on Wednesday.

"He was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and Section 20 assault and has been bailed until June 12 pending further inquiries."

Anyone with further information on the incident should call Grey Mare Lane CID on 0161 856 3540, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
