Man remanded over soldier's 1992 murder

A 36-year-old man was today remanded in custody for a week charged with murdering a soldier outside an Army recruitment office in 1992.

Declan Duffy was not required to enter a plea when he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via videolink from a prison in the north of England.

Duffy, who spoke only to confirm his name and that he could hear and see the proceedings, is accused of murdering Sergeant Michael Newman in Derby on April 14, 1992.

The Recorder of Birmingham, Judge William Davis QC, ordered Duffy to appear by videolink at Wolverhampton Crown Court for a preliminary hearing next Friday.

There was no application for bail during the proceedings which lasted for four minutes.

Derbyshire Police announced earlier this week that Duffy had been charged with Sergeant Newman's murder after being brought to England from Northern Ireland.
