Motorist leaves six-year-old to die after accident

A motorist drove away from an accident that cost the life of a girl aged six.

The driver stopped to take a look after hitting Leonie Shaw on Saturday evening but then got back in his car and disappeared without offering any help. The girl died in hospital 12 hours later with her mother Michelle, by her side.

Leonie had been playing with friends at a swing park near her home when they decided to go to a shop on the other side of the A688 in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. As she followed a friend to a central traffic island, she was hit by a turquoise H-registration Rover 827si and was thrown on to the opposite carriageway.

She had emergency surgery for severe head, back and internal injuries but died early yesterday morning

¿ A Federal Express driver, hit by his van as he tried to stop it being stolen, died yesterday. Jason Weaver, 36, was injured on Wednesday afternoon when he chased his van after it was taken from outside a shopping centre in Caerphilly, south Wales. Two men are due to appear before magistrates today, having been charged with attempted murder.
