A former boxer was shot dead early yesterday as he tried to park his car.

Neighbours in Coventry identified the manas Joseph Montague, 67. He was apparently returning home after visiting his daughter Joanne, who has multiple sclerosis. Police said he was shot more than once and had been deliberately attacked. Officers intend to release his details today after forensic science tests have been completed.

Mr Montague was described by neighbours as a caring family man who trained young boxers. He was married and had two children. Roseann Botton, who lived opposite the scene of the shooting, said: "Joe was a real gentleman and cared so much about his family."

Police are unsure if the murder involved one or two attack-ers. They urged anyone with information to come forward.
