Baby among four dead after Sheffield police car chase

A baby is among four people killed in a crash involving a car that was being chased by police in Sheffield.

The one-year-old boy was in a people carrier with two men aged 30 and 50, and a 41-year-old woman.

The adults were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash shortly before 9pm on Friday, while the baby died in hospital.

Three other passengers in the car were also injured, including a three-year-old girl with injuries that police described as life-threatening.

A 22-year-old woman remains in hospital in a critical condition and a second woman is in a serious but stable condition, South Yorkshire Police said.

They were at a junction in the Darnall area of Sheffield when their car collided with a black VW Golf that was being chased by police.

The people carrier was preparing to turn right from Main Road into a residential side street when the Golf came along Main Road, police said.

Three men travelling in the Golf, aged 23, 17 and 18 have been arrested and remain in custody after being treated for minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for review.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Jude Ashmore, said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with the families of the victims who have lost loved ones during this incredibly tragic incident.

“A high number of resources were deployed to the scene last night, with officers from all of the emergency services working through the night and into this morning to assist. Our priority now is to support the victims’ families and those affected, and work hard to determine the exact circumstances around what happened.”

She said officers would be in the Darnall area on Saturday to speak to “shocked and saddened” members of the local community and appealed for any witnesses or people with footage of the collision to contact police on 101.
