A woman has died in a crash involving a high-performance sports car.

The accident between an Audi R8 and a Ford Fiesta happened at 11.30pm last night.

Two women in the Fiesta were taken to hospital, but one was pronounced dead on arrival, according to West Midlands Police.

Another woman is still being treated for "multiple serious injuries", a force spokesman added.

The Audi driver, a 24-year-old man, left the scene of the crash, at the junction of Shaftmoor Lane and Reddings Lane in Hall Green, Birmingham, but later walked into a police station just after 3am and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The man, from the city's Acocks Green area, remains in police custody, while a passenger who was in the Audi at the time is still being treated in hospital.

Inspector Mark Watkins said: "We have launched a full investigation into this collision, which has tragically cost the life of one lady and caused serious injuries to another.

"We urge anyone who was in the area, or saw the Audi R8 in the area before the collision, to contact us as a matter of urgency."

The scene has been cordoned off while crash investigators search for clues as to what happened.
