Kenny Richey, the Scot who spent more than 20 years on death row in the United States, is due to appear in court today charged with breach of the peace after an alleged suicide attempt in Edinburgh.

The 43-year-old was arrested by police late last Friday after reportedly slashing his wrists and threatening to leap from the roof of a 40ft building.

Mr Richey is said to have been arguing with his girlfriend near his mother's flat in the west of the city when he injured himself. After paramedics arrived, he allegedly struggled with them and then scaled the wall of a nearby plumbing warehouse, refusing to come down for three hours.

A witness said: "I don't know what was going through Richey's mind but he has obviously lost the plot. He was shouting at the police to bring out their rifles. He is clearly not right in the head."

After leaving the roof, he was arrested and spent the weekend in hospital. He is due to appear at Edinburgh Sherriff Court this morning.
