Police confirmed today that a 19-year-old man stabbed in the street was murdered.

The teenager died after he staggered 50 yards from where he was stabbed in Bedford town centre on Saturday evening.

This morning, Bedfordshire Police said a post-mortem examination confirmed he died of a single stab wound to the chest.

They said a murder inquiry was officially launched after the tests ruled out the possibility that the injury was self-inflicted.

The 19-year-old, who was unemployed and lived nearby, is expected to be named later today. He is not thought to originate from the area.

He was injured in Alexandra Road at about 9.15pm but managed to seek help from door staff at private members' club The Studio Club.

Yesterday forensic teams searched the area and house-to-house inquiries were carried out to get more information.

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the incident.
