Twin babies, who were rescued from their smoke-filled bedroom by firefighters on Tuesday, have died.

The boys, 22 months old, were taken from their blazing home in Ilford, Essex, by helicopter to hospital, but later died from the effects of the fire. An investigation by the Fire Brigade and the police is underway, and preliminary findings suggest that the cause of the fire is not suspicious.

The parents of the dead children, not identified due to parental wishes, are being treated for shock and are said to be traumatised by the incident. The mother was at home at the time of the fire.

The Fire Brigade were alerted to the blaze at the terrace house in Castleview Gardens at about 2pm. Firefighters rescued the two children from a first-floor bedroom. The babies were taken to hospital in nearby Goodmayes.
