Police in Northern Ireland seized two vans containing nearly 3,000lbs of explosives after a chase in South Armagh. They believe they foiled an attempt by the IRA to continue its series of attacks on towns and cities in the province. The seizure came 12 hours after the centre of Newtownards, Co Down, was devastated by a 1,500lb van bomb.
