A man was left in a critical condition after accidentally hanging himself with a noose that had been set up as a Halloween prop at a nightclub.

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital from Pink Punters in Milton Keynes, just after 11pm on Saturday. His condition has since improved and he is now talking to staff at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Police said they would work with the local council to investigate the safety of the event.

The owner of the club, Frank McMahon, said it was a "freak accident" involving a low-hung prop that had been safely used for several years. "It is a safe system," he said. "It's just a rope with a large noose which doesn't go tight around the neck."
