Dog survives being hit by car and getting stuck under front of vehicle for 200m

A British bulldog suffered only minor injuries after it was hit by a car and rolled 200 metres down a hill under the front of the vehicle.

Winston was captured on CCTV as he ran in front of a red car which continued driving down the road in Bradford without stopping.

Bystanders reported that the animal rolled in front of the car for almost 200 metres down Thornton Road and then Kipping Lane, before the vehicle drove away.

Owner Mick Dooling found his pet bleeding from the mouth and legs.

"If that had been a child, that child would not have survived," he said. "I’m not blaming them [driver] for hitting the dog, my argument is they should have stopped."

The three-year-old bulldog had escaped Mr Dooling’s home when the door was accidentally left open.

Winston was treated with two injections in the back of his neck at the vets following the incident, which had caused some skin to come off of his legs and left a hole in his head.

The vets explained to Mr Dooling that Winston was able to survive as he is a muscular dog and was able to pull himself from under the car as it slowed down.

Mr Dooling said the psychological impact of the incident has affected the bulldog the most.

“He’s a gentle giant, plays all the time, bounces about, and he isn’t an aggressive dog,” he said. “But now his tail’s between his legs, he sticks to my leg and follows me all over. He’s a bit traumatised by it all and I’m having to wait until night time to take him out.”The incident has also been reported to the West Yorkshire Police who confirmed they are looking into the matter.

Section 170 of The Road Traffic Act 1988 states a driver must stop, report the accident and give information or documents if damage is caused to a dog. A person who fails to comply is guilty of an offence.
