Easter egg price wars: Bargain deals make eggs cheaper than normal chocolate – and supermarkets are running out as a result

The Easter holidays are a time when chocolate lovers everywhere gorge themselves on limitless amounts of confectionery goodies.

However, this year could see chocaholics up and down the country go without after Britain’s largest supermarkets warned they are running out of Easter eggs.

The competition between supermarkets to provide the lowest price Easter Egg is so great, that discounts have led to shoppers buying the bargain chocolate by the basket load, leading to a nationwide shortage.

With some eggs selling for as little as 99p, they are, in some cases, cheaper on a pound-to-weight ratio than ordinary chocolate bars, and retailers have not missed that fact.

Britain’s biggest supermarket, Tesco, has run out of several brands of chocolate eggs and Asda have had to stop selling eggs to online shoppers due to a shortage of stock.

Amongst the Egg brands that are becoming increasingly unavailable are those by confectionery heavyweights Cadbury and Nestle.

Yet, even more luxurious egg offerings from chocolate brands such as Lindt have also been in short supply.

Despite the shortage, a Tesco spokesman assured customers that the chain would be able to continue supply eggs throughout the Easter period.

He said: "You won't go in on Good Friday and find only one egg on the shelves. There will be plenty of eggs.

"It's possible we have run out of some of the ranges, in some of the sizes. Quite obviously we are close to Easter and that tends to happen."
