Eight-year-old boy killed by a falling gravestone in Glasgow cemetery

An eight-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a falling gravestone in what his family has described as a "tragic accident" .

Ciaran Williamson was injured along with two other boys, both aged 10, at a cemetery in the Cardonald area of Glasgow on Tuesday evening.

Ciaran was taken to Yorkhill children's hospital, but later died from his injuries, police have said.

One of the two other boys remained in a stable condition at Yorkhill, while the other has been released after receiving treatment at South Glasgow University Hospital.

Flowers have been left at the cemetery's entrance in tribute to the eight-year-old boy.

Police cordoned off the cemetery as investigations were carried out, although the force said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Tom McKean said: "This is such a tragic set of circumstances and our thoughts are with Ciaran's family.

"Inquiries are ongoing; however, the incident is not being treated as suspicious and a full report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Tributes have been paid to the eight-year-old, with politicians and community leaders offering their condolences.

On Twitter, SNP MP Chris Stephens wrote: "Thoughts and Prayers are with the family of Ciaran Willamson, after the tragic events at Craigton Cemetery yesterday."

Glasgow City Council has said it is helping police with their investigation into the incident.

A council spokesman said: "This is a tragic incident and our hearts go out to the child's family and friends."
