A man died after he became trapped under an industrial lawnmower, police said today.

The man, in his 50s, had been cutting grass at Stanedge Golf Club, in Ashover, Derbyshire, when he was trapped.

Derbyshire Police said they were called to the scene at about 11.45am yesterday by the ambulance service.

A spokesman said: "They reported a man had been cutting the grass at the golf course on one of those industrial mowers. He had come off and it had landed on him.

"He subsequently died - he was pronounced dead at the scene."

The spokesman said the man was in his 50s and from the Bolsover area.

He said police had started preliminary investigations into the incident, but had handed over to North East Derbyshire District Council.

A spokesman for the council said: "Officers from the council's environmental health service - in liaison with the police - are to undertake a full independent investigation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

"This investigation is ongoing and will try to determine how this tragic incident occurred."
