Detectives are investigating two deaths at a hotel in Manchester after a man fell from the building and a second person was found dead in a room.

Police were called to reports that a person had fallen from the Britannia Hotel, in the city centre, at 5.30am on Wednesday.

A man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to have fallen from the fifth floor.

Officers gained entry to a room on the first floor of the the hotel, where they found a man’s body.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "His death is being treated as suspicious, and officers are currently working to establish the identity of this man and contact his next of kin."

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection to the deaths.

Police have erected a forensic tent in Silver Street, at the rear of the hotel.

Witnesses said there was glass in the road and a ripped curtain billowing out of a window above in the seven-storey building.

Detective Chief Inspector Amber Waywell, of the force’s major incident team, said: “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and a scene remains in place on Silver Street.

“The investigation is still in its early stages but we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“If you have any information related to this incident, no matter how small or insignificant it might seem, I would urge you to get in touch with police.”

The Britannia is a Grade II*-listed Victorian building with 363 rooms. The former textile warehouse was converted into a hotel in 1982.
