A civilian police worker is being investigated after an alleged security breach at Buckingham Palace, sources said today.

The man took a woman with a number of criminal convictions into the building in June without proper security checks, it is claimed.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "A male member of staff based within specialist operations is subject to an investigation by local management into allegations he failed to follow local security policy.

"The inquiries are ongoing and the member of staff has been moved from operational duties. He has not been suspended."

According to the Daily Mail, the woman was able to enter secure areas of the palace during her visit.

The reported breach follows embarrassment in May when two undercover News of the World journalists claimed they were allowed to pose in the Queen's limousines without any vetting.
