A teenager died today after he was in collision with a patrol car, a police force said.

South Yorkshire Police said the 19-year-old pedestrian was in collision with a panda car at about 3.45am today in Sheffield.

He died at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened on Broad Lane at its junction with Mappin Street. The scene of the accident is close to Sheffield University.

The victim, who lives in Sheffield, was with two other people at the time of the incident, a police spokesman said.

The force's Professional Standards Department and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have been informed.

It is believed the police car was assisting the ambulance service with a priority incident at the time of the collision, a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said.

The scene has been sealed off. Broad Lane is shut from Brookhill roundabout to Rockingham Street and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the collision has been asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.

There was no sign of police activity this morning on Broad Lane, one of the major routes to Sheffield University.
