Girl's 999 call saves mum

A three-year-old girl called 999 when her heavily-pregnant mother fell down the stairs, saving her mum and her unborn brother from potentially serious complications.

Emma from Nailsea, Somerset, was the only other person home when her mother Catherine took a bad fall and starting dipping in and out of consciousness.

According to the South Western Ambulance Service (Swast), the little girl was able to confirm her mother “kept going to sleep” but was not bleeding, adding that she “has a baby in her tummy”.

Emma, whose surname has not been released, was honoured for her bravery in a service at the Nailsea ambulance station on Wednesday.

Now four, she was reunited with Sarah Morris, the ambulance service operator who took the unusual call.

Swast said Emma was certainly one of the youngest callers they had ever had on the line, and praised how she was able to provide her mother’s name and their address and even make sure the door was unlocked for when paramedics arrived.

Ms Morris said: “When I first spoke to the little girl I knew that she was young, but was amazed to discover that she was only three.

“The amount of detail she was able to provide was incredible; she answered every question I put to her more calmly than most adults under similar circumstances.”

According to BBC News, Emma had never actually been told about how to call 999 herself – but recalled enough from a conversation at the dinner table from when her five-year-old brother had been learning about the emergency services at school.

Her mother, Catherine, said: “I do not recall a great deal about the incident, but by all accounts Emma was absolutely amazing and so knowledgeable and calm.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Emma and am really pleased that the ambulance service is presenting her with a certificate. We are very much looking forward to meeting the staff and visiting the station.”
