Hours: He liked to get to the Savoy by 6am to be prepared, although official hours are 7am until 4pm (with one hour's break).
Salary: Starting salary of pounds 6,786, but tips can be substantial: 'If you offer a good service, people will reward you well for it.'
Perks: Free breakfast and lunch in the Savoy, 'though you mustn't linger too long over your rashers. Everybody's watching the clock.' The chance to serve the rich and famous: Michael's customers have included Mick Jagger, Michael Parkinson, Rod Stewart, Bob Hope, Richard Harris and Danny La Rue. He is often called upon to provide unusual services: he keeps a stock of eau-de- Cologne, plasters, headache pills, toothpicks and a sewing kit to replace the occasional lost button; and is regarded as an unofficial counselling service and tourist information office by his regulars.
