A man was shot dead in Belfast city centre last night by a gunman who walked into the York Hotel in Botanic Avenue and fired several shots. John Murphy, 38, a former Royal Ulster Constabulary officer, died almost immediately. There were no other casualties. The killer was driven off in a black Renault taxi, later found abandoned about a mile away.
