Labour activists and MPs were today urged to unite behind Gordon Brown to take on the Tories.

In a rabble-rousing speech, Marie Rimmer, leader of the Labour group on St Helens Council, told Mr Brown's detractors "enough is enough".

She said the Prime Minister was "truly incredible" and urged Labour to "fight for the people we came into politics to make a difference for".

Addressing the party's conference in Brighton, Ms Rimmer said: "I say to you all, and every party member, to our councillors, to our ministers and our MPs: it's time to start fighting back for Britain.

"Fighting for our people, fighting to win and I know Labour, and our Prime Minister Gordon Brown - and I've got to tell you, I love the man, I always have done.

"To those who would walk away, and to those who continue to attempt to destabilise our party, enough is enough. It's time to get back behind our leader, Gordon Brown."

She added: "Let's get behind this great man and fight for the people we came into politics to make a difference for."
