Tooting MP Sadiq Khan has been promoted to Minister of State for Transport in the Government reshuffle, it emerged today.

Mr Khan is now the lead transport speaker in the Commons, following the replacement of Geoff Hoon by Lord Adonis as Transport Secretary.

Mr Khan will attend Cabinet for discussions on transport policy and is now the most senior Muslim politician in the country, according to his website.

He was previously under-secretary of state in the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The promotion was announced on his website but has subsequently been removed. He also made the announcement on microblogging website Twitter, saying he had a call from the Prime Minister last night.

Mr Khan, the son of a bus driver, told the Sunday Mirror: "It is a privilege and an honour to be given such a great job.

"It would have made my father so proud."
