DYSENTERY: A three-fold increase in cases of dysentery was disclosed by Tom Sackville, Parliamentary Under- Secretary for Health. He told Peter Hain (Lab, Neath) the caseload rose from 2,521 in 1990 to 8,963 in 1991, compared with an annual average of 3,365 from 1987 to 1989.

PUBLIC SECTOR: Central government staff fell by nearly 13 per cent to 1,803,000, while pay increased by 142 per cent to pounds 31.6bn between 1979 and last year. For local authorities, the figures were just over 4 per cent and 167 per cent respectively, Michael Portillo, Treasury Chief Secretary, said.
