COMMUNITY CARE: After pressure for 'ring-fencing' of community care funding, Timothy Yeo, Under-Secretary of State for Health, said money transferred from social security to councils as part of the revenue support grant woud be 'transparent, separately identifiable and local authorities and others with an interest will be able to see how the calculations were done'.

SMOKE DETECTORS: It is estimated 100-150 lives a year could be saved if all homes had correctly sited and maintained smoke detectors, Tony Baldry, Under-Secretary of State for the Environment, said.
