STUDENT DEBT: The average debt from commercial borrowing by students aged 26 or under at the start of courses completed in 1992- 93 was pounds 430, Tim Boswell, the education minister, said. The average amount owed by students of all ages who took out loans was pounds 440.

HIV: New infections in England, Wales and Northern Ireland notified to the Communicable Diseases Surveillance Centre totalled 2,247 in 1992, Tom Sackville, the health minister, said. Cases involving people of 22 and older numbered 2,125.
