NHS OPERATIONS: A hip replacement costs pounds 3,810, a heart by-pass pounds 5,870, hysterectomy pounds 2,050, and heart transplant pounds 26,400, Thomas Sackville, Under-Secretary of State for Health, said.

YOUNG PEOPLE: 35 per cent of 16 to 18-year-olds remained in full-time education and training in 1988, compared with 84 per cent in Japan, and 75 per cent in the USA, Nigel Forman, an education minister, said.
